Writing in Room 10

In Room 10 we have being doing explanation writing. This is Lauren's Explanation, she wrote hers about how spiders spin webs.

How and why do spiders spin webs ?

Spiders come in many shapes and sizes, some are big and some are small. Not all spiders spin webs to catch their food. Some spiders jump on their prey and suck them to death.

Why? Spiders spin webs to catch their food, to catch predators or just for a safe place to live. To catch the insects it eats, the spider sits in the middle of the web and waits. The spider can tell if something has flown into the web because the insect struggles to get out and it lets off a vibration, this lets the spider know that it has caught an insect.

How? Spiders release a thin white thread from their bodies, Every web starts with a single bit of thread. The web is constructed by walking along the thread below and then releasing a losser thread. The web gets stickier and stronger the more thread the spider uses.

All spiders need to spin webs either to live in or to catch their prey. If they didn't catch the food they needed they would die. It is a good thing that they spin webs to catch flys because if they didn't the world would be over populated with flys and other insects.

BY LAUREN

In this explanation Lauren has included things like . . .

  • A general statement in the opening paragraph that defines the topic,
  • ideas explaining how and why something happens in a logical paragraph,
  • keywords used in each paragraph,
  • language is used to show effect.

In Room 10 we know if we have done these things we know we have completed our explanation stories to a high standard.
