Room 2's Poetry

This term in Room 2 we have been doing Poetry this term. We have been exploring different types of Poetry.

Also, the children have been working on some Christmas Card Designs for the Wairarapa Workforce Development Trust. It is a competition and the winning design will be used by the WWDT company as their Christmas Cards this year.

Haiku

The first type of Poetry we did was a Haiku. Haikus are about nature and usualy involve seasons. The first line of a Haiku poem has 5 syllables, the second line has 8 syllables and the final line has 5 syllables.

I am poem

The next type of Poetry we wrote was our I am Poems. In these poems we wrote about our interests and beiefs. The first line of the I am poem is repeated throughout the poem. Here are a few examples of our work:

Morgan's I am Poem

I am the world's next best
I want world peace and racial equality
I think wars are a thing of the past
I am the world's next best

I believe that new technologies will lead our way
I want everyone to be happy
I feel that people need to treat their world better
I say that everything can be changed
I am the world's next best

I understand that every person is different
I strive to be the best I can be
I hope that the world will be here for the next generation
I dream of a world with no worries
I am the world's next best

Campbell's I am Poem

I am cool, funny and loving to my family.
I want people to stop calling people names.
I thing that soccer is the best.
I am cool, funny amd loving to my family.

I believe that everyone can achieve their dreams.
I want a motor bike and a motor bike track.
I feel that I can achieve anything in my life.
I say that everyone has a dream to come true.
I am cool, funny and loving to my family.

I undersatnd that no one is perfect.
I strive to do my best in my work.
I hope that I have great life.
I dream to live in Brisbane and be an a accountant.
I am cool, funny and loving to my family.

Cinquain

The next type of Poetry we wrote was a Cinquain. We wrote cinquains about the Ocean. We did a class brainstorm of words to do with the Ocean. Then we each wrote a cinquain about the Ocean. Here are some examples of our work:

David's Cinquain

Ocean

Deep blue

Calm and cool

Thrashing, splashing, alive

Ocean

Lymrick

The next tyoe of Poetry we tried was Lymricks. They are rhyming poems that have a lot of humor and don't allways make sense! Lines 1,2 and 5 rhyme with each other and lines 3 and 4 rhyme with each other. Lines 1,2 and 5 each have 8 syllables and lines 3 and 4 have 5 syllables. Here are some examples of our work:

Niko's Snake Lymrick

There once was a fat, long, green snake

That had a terrible back ache

So he went to bed

They thought he was dead

So they baked him up in a cake!
