Music

All students at Masterton Intermediate School take 4 terms of music during their two years at the school. Within each terms lessons the students will be exposed to:

  • movement
  • learning to read music
  • listening
  • singing
  • simple music composition
  • acid music
  • playing (keyboard, guitar, percussion)

This creates a variety for the students and keeps them motivated.

Students are able to join a number of performing groups which practice at various times during the week.

  • choir
  • beginner orchestra
  • full orchestra
  • rock band

There are performances held throughout the year at school and each year our groups join together with Havelock North Intermediate for a combined concert in Term 4.

The school runs an instrumental music programme. Lessons are taken at school during class time by experienced tutors. The tutors are employed by the Ministry of Education and lessons are free to students with the exception of guitar and drums. All instrumental students are expected to play in either the beginner or full orchestra.

The school has established a hire pool of musical instruments which can be hired out at a reasonable rate for tuition.
