Term Two

Wow - Already half way through the term. What a busy but fun term we have had.

In Room 9 this term we are focusing on the Soccer World Cup with students studying countries that are participating. We will be writing explanation and response pieces of writing that relate directly to the Soccer World Cup.

Students will also be given the opportunity to create a cup art piece that reflects their countries culture, langauge and history.

Ken Catran visit to the LIbrary

Ken Catran, NZ author of books for young adults and writer of such things as Shortland Street, the movie script for Under the Mountain....etc...came to the Wairarapa last week and came to MIS to run a workshop for all our budding writers.

Three sessions were held over the day with the students learning the basics of creating good short stories.  Ken encouraged the students to write everything down and when not writing read (to see how others do it!)

Letters to the Prime Minister of New Zealand

For assessment this term we had to write a formal letter to the Prime Minister of New Zealand.  We had to choose a subject area that we felt strongly about. I chose to write a letter about why smoking should be made illegal.

Year 7's Memo Holders

The year 7's have just completed their Memo Holders with some very good results being achieved. Some of the intricate art work that has been produced with the burners has certainly enhanced the projects.

Our next two lessons is going to be teaching the students the easy steps to sketching with confidence.

Update from Room 7

HI to all

Another term is flying past us. We are now in Week 7.

Room 7 have been busy this term, we have been looking at Poverty in the world as part of our theme and as a class 90% of the students have been happy to complete the 20/40 hr famine in some way. So far our class has raised about $300.00. Well done to those students that have raised the sponsorship and brought in their money so far, especially Dionesia who made over $100 dollars on her own.

Congratulations to the 11 students who have been selected for our Havelock North Exchange taking part in Week 9.

Term 2 Year 7's

This term see's the year 7 students learning the basics of wood technology.  We have introduced the safety requirements and the rules that are expected of every student to ensure their safety in this practical environment.

Title pages have been completed with some excellent results from most students, however there were a few that needed to complete a lunch-time session to finish this task.

Room 5 Homework

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note explaining the reading homework for the remainder of the term.

Students in Room 5 have started a new reading programme where they are reading a novel/chapter book. Each Day 2, 4 and 6 on our timetable we will be discussing and responding to the chapters students have read. Therefore, It is crucial that students read up to the target chapters. There is some class time available for them to read but it would be helpful to them to read at home too.

The books must be returned at the end of the term.

Thanks,

Steph Bunny
