Cooking Room's blog

End of year

Hi  and greetings to your all from the Cooking room.   We are coming to the end of a very hectic term and it is nice to say that the profiles are completed and this has given us the opportunity of show casing lots of positive comments illustrating your students efforts.

This last cycle has seen most students make a Christmas Wreath to cover the curriculum in cultural and festive foods.

We had promised some photos however we will have to show them another time as we have had an ICT glitch!

Term 4 Home Eonomics

Greetings to all,

The term is racing along and we have so much we want to achieve in the next few weeks.   Year 8 students are back and keen to get going again.  Some students need to brush up on techniques and listening skills however the majority are on the ball and keen to demonstrate the skills they already have.

Last week we had the Havelock  North Exchange Programme and in the Home Economics Room we had a group of eager students who came very well prepared.

Home Economics

This has been a busy term for the Year 7's completing a unit on "The Healthy Lunchbox". We have concentrated on a number of recipes that do not replace sandwitches and bread rolls but offer some tasty alternatives to give added intrest to the lunchbox. A healthy focus has also encouraged students to think about body needs at their given age and the importance of reading labels to make informed choices.

Home Economics

This week the Year 7's have been making muesli bars.

For homework this week the students had a task to make and design a muesli bar as if they were going to sell it in our school canteen.

Making Macaroni Cheese

Using a No 2 Roux Sauce. We are doing a unit on healthy lunchboxes and this recipe is an example of a suitable container lunch

Sayonara Evening

The Sayonara Evening went well. The students arrived after school on Friday afternoon and took over the Home Economics Room.

Their teachers said they had practised the recipes at their school in Osaka, Japan and knew what they had to do.

They were in organised groups and made a number of tasty dishes. They used some New Zealand produce and also brought dehydrated food from Japan.

Fun With Food

Every class goes to the Cooking Room for 2 terms a year and in the Cooking Room we have made:  Cheese potato, burgers, pizza, mueseli bars, stewed apple and citrus drinks.

Home Economics - Japanese Visit

The Japanese Visit to the Home Economics Room

On Monday the 8th August a group of ten Japanese students and ten host students came to the Home Economics Room to create some Kiwiana food.

We made cheese scones which is a "top" favourite of the Japanese students as they love cheese.  Out teacher, Mrs Martin, demonstrated each stage of the cooking process.  All students made a tasty batch of scones and the Japanese teachers' enjoyed the scones made by the our teacher.

News from the Cooking Room

This cycle see's the Year 8's back cooking with enthusiasm.

They are learning how to make a "roux" sauce (white sauce) which we flavour with cheese to make a sauce to cover layered cooked potato. We also discuss how to use left over food in other dishes.

This is all part of the Packaging Unit illustrating ready made meals that could be sold in the school canteen.
